GLOOBLES FRIEND: Sophie Beeftink in Blog

get to know us

Sophie started her professional career as a model in New York but after a few years she decided to follow her passion in Amsterdam and become an art historian. Sophie then moved back to New York to chase her true love and found a job at Tina Kim Gallery, the coolest contemporary art space in town. Sophie is also a passionate photographer. She knows exactly where the great exhibitions & exciting auctions are and which galleries & art spaces are the hottest in town.

Tina Kim Gallery!

art piece
changes constantly, but I recently enjoyed one of Pipilotti Rist’s video works from her ‘Pixel Forest’ exhibition at the New Museum. One particular room was transformed into a massive dreamlike environment where you got the chance to be very close to nature through beautiful video projections while laying on beds and looking at nature maximized by technology. A very nice and surprising experience when living in New York City ?

The Armory Show 2016, New York

museum shop
MoMA design store in SoHo, New York.

exhibition
I thought the latest exhibition of Gabriel Orozco at Kurimanzutto Gallery in Mexico City was genius. For this show Orozco proposed a game where logos and the rules of the market are set against each other; the art market and the market of household appliances in a supermarket within an art gallery. Kurimanzutto gallery opened an OXXO, the most wide-spread convenience store in Mexico, which operated as such for the duration of thirty working days within the gallery.

art fair
Tefaf, Maastricht. Period.

yoga school
Yoga to the People in St. Marks Place (East Village). The studio is donation based; it is a way to keep doors open for people who can’t afford doing yoga on a regular basis.

cinema
Cinecenter in Amsterdam and Film Forum in New York.

local beauty tip
Sakura nail salon in the East Village and a sketchy but not so sketchy massage place called Foot Heaven in Chinatown. I also recommend the Red Door Spa by Elisabeth Arden for their facial on Union Square, NY.

juice bar
Juice Generation on Spring Street in Soho; I always order the Protein Revolution Acai Bowl and a freshly squeezed ginger shot.

health food spot
Sweetgreen (several locations in New York) and El Rey in the Lower East Side. El Rey’s kale salad with extra avocado and egg is the best!

cheat food spot (guilty pleasure)
There’s no such thing as cheat food but… Salsa Shop in Amsterdam; the blueberry cheesecakes at the Little Cupcake Bakeshop, Thai food at Uncle Boons and falafel sandwiches at Taïm, which are all located in Nolita, NY.

destinations to photograph
Anywhere in Italy.

date spot
I would choose a loud, lively and not pretentious spot; Emily in Brooklyn is a great place with delicious pizza AND burgers. And I like Pasquale Jones in Nolita, also for their pizza.. I like pizza. If you’re not a pizza person, I would recommend Red Farm, which serves very good Chinese food at a very non Chinese looking and cosy restaurant. If you do want something pretentious, romantic and cool, l would go for drinks at the The top of the Standard at The Standard in the Meatpacking District. This place has a beautiful view over the city and draws a cool, mixed and international crowd.

where to spot models in the wild
When joining ‘my boys’ during a night out in New York! Biggest chances are at Up and Down, Casablanca and the Blonde.
