With Frieze just around the corner, kicking off the autumn art season, gloobles friends & family are packing our bags & heading to London. We strongly suggest you do too, as there is little better than London in the fall. The air is crisp, & the gentle winds carry the vegetal scent of leaves across your nose. The shops have lined their shelves with chic winter gear, & you might even be ready to sip a mulled wine in the evenings. & of course there's Frieze.
It is a fantastic fair, chock full of exciting contemporary art & wonderful Old Master Works. With so much to see, however, it can feel a little overwhelming. So we sat down with two of our dear gloobles friends who truly have their finger on the pulse of all the art world happenings. Keziah & Dámaso are dishing on their favourite booths, where to grab a bite to eat before you hit the fair & where they like to hit they hay at the end of a long, art-filled day.
So, guys, we're feeling a bit lost with what to see at Frieze, as it is always so huge. Can you tell us the must-see stands?
Keziah: I always enjoy the different curated sections & am particularly interested in seeing Social Work this year. Also, Esther Schipper & Hauser & Wirth always bring really impressive installations, & I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring this year. The fairs are filled with so much wonderful art, so I always make my "to-see" list prior to the fairs - I recommend you all do the same! At Frieze London, the Focus section (Blue, H Booths) centres around emerging artists & galleries. You’re sure to find great works here, & it’s ideal for emerging collectors.
Dámaso: There is indeed always so much to see at Frieze that sometimes you really have to pick and choose where you want to spend your time. My favourite stands are Solomon Lilian, Gallerie Chenel & Kunstkammer Georg Laue. & of course Colnaghi!
After taking in all this culture, you're certainly sure to work up an appetite. Where do you like to eat during Frieze?
Keziah: This year will be particularly exciting for foodies coming to Frieze. River Café, the iconic London restaurant, will be setting up shop at Frieze London. This is their first ever pop-up, & we’re sure it will be quite an experience. If you’re in the mood for Japanese, Umu always makes for a fantastic choice at Frieze Masters. If you’re in a rush, you can always grab something from Gails; their selection of sweet & savoury pastries have become a staple food in London. My personal favourite is the spinach ricotta roll. If you’re looking to dine with friends, you’re spoiled for choice in central London. A few restaurants that are at the top of my list include Chiltern Firehouse, Soho House, Scott's, Fischer's, Berners Tavern & Rochelle Canteen at Institute of Contemporary Arts
Dámaso: There are so many fantastic places in London to eat. If I have the time, I love to go to somewhere old school like Andrew Edmunds or somewhere a bit more vibey like Kiln in Soho. Though it's not exactly a place to eat, it's also great to hang out at the Anglesea Arms on a sunny afternoon.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have a little pied-à-terre in London where they can stay during Frieze, so where would you recommend people bunk up?
Dámaso: To be honest I almost never stay in hotels when I'm in London, as I like to pop in and see friends who live in London. If you aren't keen to crash on someone's sofa, then I'd say somewhere like Dean Street Townhouse is nice, as it's near enough to Regent's Park but also has a lot going on around it in the evenings.
Though we may get to see everything from the outside, we're just a little bit curious about how things go down during Frieze behind the scenes. Could you run us through a loose sketch of your Frieze week?
Keziah: My fair week is always hectic - but equally amazing. In my role, I look after our non-profit partners & manage some of the creative initiatives that we lead for clients. So I am constantly walking between artists, curators, technicians, patrons, & talks at the fair. The preview to the Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern is a terrific way to start Frieze week. Throughout the week, I try to see the gallery and museum shows in town, specifically on Thursday & Friday night. During the weekend, we can finally let our hair down & host a big party to celebrate such an eventful week. & finally, Sunday is reserved for spending time at Frieze Masters & enjoying a lovely lunch at Umu. The day after the fair closes, it’s time to reflect on the great week, relax & gear up for the exciting things to come. This year in particular, the entire team is already setting their sights on Frieze Los Angeles opening for the first time in February.
